Since its passage in 1974, the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) has imposed an escalating number of regulations upon plan sponsors of health and other welfare benefits-including medical, dental, life insurance and disability plans to name a few.
 
As Congress passed additional laws augmenting ERISA such as COBRA, HIPAA, and most recently the ACA, and as the IRS and DOL issued subsequent regulations on these, complying with the numerous requirements has become increasingly complicated.
 
All plan sponsors need to be aware of certain key provisions of ERISA that affect plan design, administration, and compliance. Periodic assessment of employer practices and procedures is critical to avoid problems.
